Mineral Potential Maps

The Système de production des cartes de potentiel minéral (SPCPM) is a mineral potential assessment tool, which makes it possible to produce maps based on an ore deposit model that show zones favourable to the presence of mineralization.

This tool is designed to use the vast digital datasets in SIGEOM, in order to retrieve all relevant parameters for a given ore deposit model. A wide variety of parameters may be selected, according to the type of ore deposit under study: for example, among the wide range of elements accessible in SIGEOM, selected features may relate to the presence of alteration minerals reported in some of the 235,000 outcrop descriptions, or to the presence of anomalous grades of specific metals in some 129,000 drillholes or in roughly 11,500,000 secondary environment analytical results (lake sediments, soils, stream sediments, tills). External data may also be integrated, such as topographic lineaments traced on Landsat images, or any other linear or planar anomaly derived from geomagnetic or gravity images.

Gold potential in Archean rocks of the Baie-James region

A favourability study of the potential for orogenic (or mesothermal) gold deposits in the Baie James region was completed. The study resulted in the definition of 735 high-favourability zones and 114 unstaked targets as of November 1, 2007. A gold favourability map at 1:500,000 scale was produced.

Assessment of base metal potential in the Abitibi region

The Deparment has also published an overview assessment of base metal potential in the Abitibi sub-province and the Frotet-Evans belt. This is the first time in Québec that an area of this size has been studied, with such a large range of integrated data and such high-resolution treatment. This large-scale survey covers all the Archean volcanic rock located between the 47th and 51st degrees of latitude (figure 1). The survey is intended to define and document 150 target areas in the territory covered that offer the most potential for new discoveries.

The final assessment will include:

  • A 1:500,000 map of the sector, together with roughly;
  • 120 1:50,000 maps produced using ArcGIS software and available on DVD in PDF format;
  • Intermediate products in digital format will also be available, such as a lithological map of Abitibi using closed polygons, based on the 1:20,000 and 1:50,000 maps available for the sector as a whole.
