Knowledge about caribou movements is made possible today through the use of radio-collars. More than one hundred animals are currently fitted with these tracking devices, which generate satellite locations on a regular basis. This system notably allows biologists to study the behaviour of caribou in relation to their habitat and environmental conditions. Remote monitoring by satellite is henceforth the foundation for the protection of this resource and for the sound management of hunting.
A caribou with a radio-collar can represent an investment of several thousand dollars. We ask that you refrain from killing animals fitted with a collar. If you should kill one of these caribou, advise a biologist or a wildlife protection officer immediately and return the collar. Not only will it be put back to good use for a fraction of the cost of a new one, it will also provide invaluable biological information on the status of the herds.
The Ministère would like to inform its clientele that, from now on, when satellite telemetry maps of caribou migrations are purchased, only movements of the Rivière-aux-Feuilles herd can be monitored. In view of the overriding concern regarding the Rivière-George herd, the Ministère has decided to stop publishing the data related to that herd. Maps of the Rivière-aux-Feuilles caribou herd migrations may be purchased at a cost of 2 $ per copy from the Géoboutique Québec, using the procedure in place since November 16th, 2010. For more information or for guidance on making an on-line purchase, feel free to contact Customer Service at the Géoboutique Québec.
