INTERNATIONAL HUMANE
TRAPPING STANDARDS

For certain species and certain types of traps, only traps “certified” compliant with these standards are allowed.

The certified trap models receive exclusive identification letters that manufacturers have to affix to the traps that have been manufactured and certified since 2007. However, even if the traps do not bear this identification, trappers will still be able to use these same trap models legally.

Types of certified traps which are not obligatory

For the following species and categories of traps, the obligation to only use traps “certified under the Agreement on International Humane Treatments Standards (AIHTS)” is not yet in effect. The date of the entry into force will be known at least three years ahead of time and may vary from one species to the next.

In the meantime, the traps currently authorized for these species continue to be authorized.

As the tests have not yet been completed, the Ministère des Ressources naturelles et de la Faune will inform trappers as changes occur on this subject.
