This expertise in aerial photography and aerotriangulation,
which is made available to agencies and departments of the gouvernement du Québec, covers the following:
- Defining needs;
- Planning work;
- Writing technical specifications;
- Awarding and supervising contracts;
- Quality control;
- Archiving original documents.
In order to respond to client needs, the Department
offers the most suitable photographic product (camera, focal length,
emulsion, scale), backed by advanced technology:
- Georeferencing when the photograph is taken;
- Photogrammetric control using different GPS measurement
methods;
- Analytic aerotriangulation or videogrammetric aerotriangulation.
The Department's archives contain nearly 2,000,000
aerial photographs, at scales that vary from 1:3,000 to 1:60,000.
Several editions of photographs taken at different scales are available
for the same territory. Each year, 50,000 photographs are added
to the bank, including 3,000 that have been aerotriangulated for
cartographic purposes.
Areas of Application
Aerial photographs represent the territory at a
particular moment in time. They are used to have an image of the
past or present, or for project planning.
Aerial photography is used in various fields
of endeavor.
- Law: serves as proof during litigations.
- Urbanization: to study the development of cities and to safeguard
natural and tourist sites.
- Land-use planning: to redevelop land in accordance with its
original form or to serve in preparing master city plans.
- Forestry: to inventory tree species, assess forestry potential;
estimate and delimit damage caused by fire, insects, or wind;
and plan forest roads.
- Civil engineering: to determine the best sites for major infrastructure
components such as factories, dams, ports, roads.
- Agriculture: to predict the performance of crops and estimate
the damage caused by insects, disease, or flooding.
The homogeneity and quality
of work are achieved through the application of rigorous standards.
Projects managed by the Department are carried out by specialized
Québec firms, who have already worked abroad, in particular,
in Africa, Central America, and South America.
The Department has acquired extensive expertise
in aerial photography and aerotriangulation. This recognized know-how
can be shared with any government interested in optimally developing
its territory.
