Trapping and Management of Furbearing Animals (TMFA)



 

To obtain a trapper's certificate, the candidate must follow the training and pass the written exam of this module. The certificate is required to purchase a licence to trap furbearing animals in Québec.


General objective

The aim of this training module is to train safe, responsible and efficient trappers. It advocates the sustainable use of the wildlife resource.

Content of the training module

  • Trapper’s ethics;
  • Traps and their components;
  • Safe handling of traps;
  • Appropriate trapping techniques by species;
  • Sustainable harvesting of wildlife by trapping;
  • Ecology and management of furbearing animals;
  • Diseases and parasites;
  • Trapping regulations;
  • Pelt preparation of furs.

Two types of training

To successfully complete the module and to obtain a trapper’s certificate, you can follow the type of training of your choice:

Training with an instructor

Training at home

Given by an experienced instructor

Learning at your own pace with the manual and training videocassette

2 training sessions per region per year (May and August)

4 exam sessions per region per year (February, May, August and November)

2 days (16 hours) of comprehensive training:

  • 1st day: learning in the field (demonstrations and practical exercises)
  • 2nd day: classroom instruction

Possibility of taking training with an instructor within the year following the registration

Written exam

  • It contains 50 multiple-choice questions;
  • The exam session lasts a maximum of 60 minutes;
  • The passing grade is set at 60%.

Following payment of the registration fee, you will receive the training manual and videocassette as well as your first FTGQ membership card.
